Anesthesia
Safe, Personalized Anesthesia for Your Pet
Anesthesia is one of the things pet owners worry about most — and rightly so. Done well, it’s remarkably safe; done with shortcuts, it isn’t. The difference comes down to careful pre-anesthetic evaluation, drug protocols matched to the individual patient, advanced real-time monitoring, and a trained team member whose only job is watching your pet from start to finish.
At Skaer Veterinary Clinic, we provide thoroughly monitored, individualized veterinary anesthesia for dogs and cats from Wichita, Derby, Bel Aire, Park City, Maize, Haysville, Schulte, and Oatville. Whether your pet is in for a dental, a soft-tissue surgery, or an imaging procedure that requires sedation, we apply the same careful, safety-first approach to every case.

Anesthesia Done Properly — Every Single Time
There are ways to do anesthesia that cost less. Fewer monitoring steps, simpler protocols, less personalization. We don’t do any of that — because those shortcuts also reduce safety. And that’s not something we’re willing to accept for your pet. Or our own animals.
Anesthesia at Skaer Veterinary Clinic is a carefully managed, highly individualized process. Every single aspect is designed with your pet’s safety and comfort as the absolute priority.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Five things we do on every single anaesthetic case — without exception.
Pre-anesthetic evaluation and bloodwork
Before your pet goes under anesthesia for any procedure, we run diagnostic tests and do a thorough health evaluation. This tells us about their organ function, identifies any underlying conditions we need to know about, and helps us build the safest possible plan for them specifically.
A custom protocol for every patient
No two patients get the same anaesthetic plan. We factor in your pet’s age, breed, weight, health history, and the specific procedure they’re having.
Advanced monitoring throughout
Once your pet is under anesthesia, we track their vital signs continuously — heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, temperature, and ventilation.
A dedicated nurse — from start to finish
A trained staff member is assigned solely to monitor your pet’s anesthesia for the entire duration of the procedure. They don’t do anything else. Their full attention is on your pet.
Stress-free recovery
When the procedure is done, the care doesn’t stop. We use warming systems, gentle handling, and proactive pain control to make sure your pet wakes up safely and comfortably.
Anesthesia Questions Answered
Is anesthesia safe for my pet?
When done properly, the risk of a serious anaesthetic complication in a healthy pet is very low. We reduce risk further through pre-operative testing, personalised protocols, and continuous monitoring.
My pet is older. Is anesthesia still safe for them?
Age alone isn’t a reason to avoid necessary procedures. Older pets do need more careful management — more thorough pre-operative testing, adjusted drug choices, and close monitoring. That’s exactly what we provide.
What happens if something goes wrong during the procedure?
Our team is trained to respond immediately to any changes in your pet’s vitals. Our monitoring equipment gives us real-time data, and our dedicated nurse is watching every moment.
Do I need to fast my pet before anesthesia?
Yes, generally. We’ll give you specific instructions when you book. Typically, no food after midnight the night before.
